LIVE THE ADVENTURE
An Epic Immersive Adventure Where You Are One of the Heroes
This adventure allows you to play a fictional character during the era of the American Westward Expansion. It is an adventure game in which you will solve puzzles, carry out actions, complete quests, and bring your character and their story to life. Below, you will find some initial answers to your questions.
An Adventure in Which You Are Both the Actor and the Audience
From the outside, this adventure might resemble a historical reenactment, a period-costume performance, or even a giant theatrical production. Yet you will not simply watch it—you will live it and help bring it to life. There will be no spectators judging you: this is a live-action role-playing experience in which you—and all the other participants—will portray the characters of a shared story in real life.
Unlike actors performing in a play or a film, participants do not know how the story will end (its outcome will depend in part on their actions). You will not know, at least not in detail, the stories of the other characters you meet and with whom you will experience the adventure. There is no script to memorize, apart from reading and understanding the character you will portray. It is up to you to improvise and react according to the events your character encounters.
All participants, including yourself, are therefore both the actors and the audience of a story whose world and plot have been designed by the organizers. The story unfolds in real time, shaped by the interactions between players and their responses to the intrigues, challenges, and events planned within the scenario.
What Is the Goal of the Game? To Bring the story to life Together!
This is an adventure and a collaborative adventure game that is experienced in real life. However, unlike a traditional “game,” the objective is not to win, be the strongest, or perform better than others. Think of it more like a movie in which you are one of the heroes, set in incredible environments, with the purpose of enjoying the experience and creating unforgettable memories.
About the Character you will portray
Before the game begins, you will receive your Character Sheet. There, you will discover a summary of your character’s life story and personal background: their childhood, hometown, profession, and more.
You will also learn about the important events they have experienced, their allies and enemies, the affairs they have been involved in, and everything they have heard about the world around them. In short, your Character Sheet contains everything that makes your character feel as though they already truly exist, with things to do, things to say, things to discover—and perhaps even things to hide.
Everything written in your Character Sheet is known only to you (just as the contents of other players’ Character Sheets are known only to them). During the adventure, you are free to decide whether you want—or need—to reveal certain “secrets” from your past.
But be careful: some of the characters you meet may already know things about you through their own personal histories… and the same may be true in reverse.
You do not need to memorize everything in your Character Sheet. Simply try to identify and remember the key events, as well as the important names, places, and people mentioned within it.
To Help you get into Character
Read your Character Sheet carefully so that you understand your character’s past and gain a clear sense of their motivations, the kinds of relationships they may have, and the situations they might encounter with the other characters they will meet.
Imagine how your character speaks. They probably do not express themselves the same way you do in everyday life! Is your character a cowboy, a lady, a gold prospector, a banker, a future sheriff…? Picture yourself in the American West of the last century (feel free to rewatch a few scenes from classic Western movies if needed) and imagine how your character might talk, as well as the expressions and turns of phrase that would suit them.
Your costume will be one of your greatest allies! You will quickly discover that putting on a costume helps you step into your character’s shoes. It is also an essential element in creating immersion for all the other participants who will be playing alongside you:
« That woman is dressed elegantly; she must be a lady who knows influential people in this town… »
For this reason, the costume you wear during the game should match the role you are playing. It should also be consistent with the Old West setting and time period of the adventure.
To achieve this, try to avoid anachronisms. For example, choose comfortable leather boots or ankle boots that look as period-appropriate as possible. Avoid modern « country » style clothing, cowboy boots with contemporary designs, or leather hats, as these do not fit the spirit of the era portrayed in the game.
Before the adventure begins
Once you arrive at the studios and just before the game starts, you will attend the organizers’ briefings. In addition to reviewing the rules, they will introduce the members of the team, many of whom will portray characters that you will encounter during your adventure.
This will also be an opportunity to meet the other participants and their characters. Do not hesitate to mention that you are a beginner: experienced players were once newcomers too, and they will be delighted to offer advice and help guide you through your first experience.
You will soon discover that it takes very little time to feel completely comfortable and immersed in this unique adventure!
When it Begins!
That’s it! The organizers give the signal to start the adventure. It is now up to you to navigate the intrigues and storylines in which you will be involved over the course of several days.
And you can trust the organizers to immerse you in the action very quickly! Let yourself be carried away by the experience and truly live your character. Do what you think your character would do in your situation. There is no choice that is better than another, no action that is more important than any other: there are only your choices.
And above all: have fun playing!
How to play your character
In The Ultimate Western, you will portray one of the adventure’s characters. To do so, you do not need to memorize any lines or attend any rehearsals: all you have to do is act as if what is happening were real.
For example, imagine that you are standing at a bank counter when a desperado bursts in and threatens everyone with a gun. The character you are portraying must treat that Colt revolver as if it were a real weapon. Your character must therefore react accordingly.
It is up to you to decide what you want to do, and then do it “for real.” Let’s say you decide to calm the outlaw down: your character would speak to them directly, finding the right words to negotiate. If instead you decide to escape, it is up to you to figure out how to discreetly make your way to the exit without being noticed.
But if the bank robber spots you and “shoots” you in the leg with a blank round 😉 to stop you from leaving, you are free to cry out in pain… which might even allow another character—perhaps a doctor passing by the bank at that very moment—to hear you and come to your aid!
And so on…
In the same way, you will have to improvise everything that happens to your character, as well as everything your character decides to do. Your character can do almost anything (as long as it is consistent with their background and personality): lie, betray, charm, negotiate, investigate, spy…
It is up to you to enjoy playing all of this out… as if it were real!
The only thing that really matters? Playing your character.
At The Ultimate Western, playing your role and helping to create engaging interactions with other players while staying true to the spirit of the game’s universe is called roleplay.
Failing to play your character can negatively impact everyone’s experience, because what the other players expect from you is to:
- Play your character with and for the other characters. It is by reacting and improvising in response to another player’s words or actions that you help build the story, bring interactions to life, and create memorable scenes.
- Avoid breaking the game’s immersion by acting or speaking as yourself rather than as your character (for example, by scrolling through photos on your phone or talking about your latest ski vacation). If you are around players who are actively roleplaying, stay in character so as not to disrupt their enjoyment. If you need to take care of something outside the game, step away from the action for a few moments.
The limits of a game... without limits!
In the immersive adventure The Ultimate Western, your character can theoretically do almost anything (either physically or through game simulation rules). But being able to do anything does not mean doing just anything.
Always remember to play:
- Without putting yourself or others at physical risk.
- Without behaving in a way that could make other players uncomfortable.
- With good sportsmanship and in accordance with the rules established by the organizers.
Once again, keep in mind that you are not playing to win—you are playing to live an experience.
Avoid Breaking Immersion
Be careful not to spoil the immersion for everyone by saying things that are out of place.
Things that fall outside the game’s setting:
❌ « I’ll look up the Sheriff’s address on the internet… »
✔ Instead, ask the saloon owner. 😉
❌ « Anyway, we know that this U.S. President is going to be assassinated next year. »
If the game takes place in 1879, your character has no idea what will happen in 1880 or beyond!
Things intended to make imaginary abilities or objects seem real:
❌ « Actually, let’s pretend I have sticks of dynamite in my bag. »
No. Either your character genuinely has (prop) sticks of dynamite that they found during the game, or there is nothing in the bag and your character is simply lying to make others believe they do.
❌ « My father was a doctor, and when I was young I watched him perform surgery, so I can heal this person. »
No. Either your Character Sheet explicitly states that you possess a particular skill (such as Medicine in this example), or you genuinely know nothing about it—in which case your character is simply lying to the others.
Things that ruin dramatic scenes and player immersion:
❌ « Hey, the blood on the dead guy’s head is fake! »
Well, of course it is—it’s makeup… and thankfully so! 😄
The important thing is to react to the situation as your character would, not as a player who knows what is happening behind the scenes. That is what keeps the story alive and immersive for everyone involved.
Can I stop playing sometimes?
Yes, of course—you are allowed to take a break!
Your adventure will last several days, and you will remain “in character” continuously (except during meal times and when you go to sleep). It is perfectly normal to sometimes feel the need to rest, take a break, or even make a phone call. In that case, simply step out of the game area and isolate yourself for a moment so that you do not disrupt the immersion of the other players.
When and how does the game end?
The game concludes during a final sequence. The organizers will clearly let you know when the story comes to an end… at least for now!
The Ultimate Western is a complete and evolving universe, and many more adventures await you in other towns and locations—whether with the same character or a brand-new one.
After the game ends, the organizers will hold a debriefing session about the adventure you have experienced. This will also be an opportunity for them to gather your feedback, impressions, and suggestions.
You will then have the chance to chat with the other players and actors during the Final Fiesta!
To conclude:
Interaction between players is at the very heart of this incredible adventure.
Your character is autonomous throughout the game, and you are free to develop and portray them as you wish, provided that you respect the game rules and maintain a spirit of fairness and respect toward the other players and actors.
And never forget:
- The goal of your live-action adventure is not to win or lose, but to have fun!
- For reasons of physical and emotional safety, any truly dangerous action is simulated using prop weapons and/or specific game mechanics. Never put yourself or anyone else at risk, and do not hesitate to stop the game if necessary.
- You are playing a character, and so is everyone else. You should not take personally any words or actions directed at your character.
If a desperado speaks harshly to you, or a rancher cheats you out of a few dollars during a poker game, your character is perfectly entitled to get angry in character and react accordingly. But none of it is personal.
Remember: it is all part of the game.
